5/31: an anniversary film
Somehow, in spite of having three sequels, I’ve managed not only to never see this movie but to also acquire very little knowledge about it. I mean I think I’ve always known William Lustig directed it, but I didn’t realize Larry Cohen wrote it or maybe I did at one time but forgot? The point is that it was news to me tonight. So as I was (finally) watching it and reading off some of the cast names on screen: Bruce Campbell, Tom Atkins, Richard Roundtree, I was thinking “no seriously how have I never seen this” and then Victoria Catlin pops up and I’m just like “ok bitch HOW this is just embarrassing”. But hey, better late than never, right?
This was great. I absolutely adore a good grimy slasher that uses seedy 80’s Manhattan as a backdrop. It’s always weird to see Bruce as anything other than Ash, but he sure does look great in 1988. The whole final 20 minutes was great fun and I was loving that final shot full of sequel promise. I’ll be checking out the rest of these during this wonderful Halloween season.
