Us ★★★

I dunno guys. I feel like I watched a totally different movie than the one you all hyped up. Maybe I read too many positive reviews beforehand and got my expectations too high, and maybe that 4 star average led me on a bit, but I thought this was inferior to Get Out and I wasn’t really thrilled with it. It was kind of corny. I wasn’t sure whether to laugh throughout or what, because that’s what most of the teenagers in our theater were doing during. I thought there were a lot of cool ideas that just weren’t executed as well as they could have been. There’s no denying that original score is pretty tight, but the soundtrack was very hit-or-miss and the upbeat rap kind of took away from the atmosphere.
It kind of begins in the same vein as Climax (and I mean that very loosely) by starting with a shot of a TV wedged between VHS tapes that influenced the film. Here we see classics like C.H.U.D., A Nightmare on Elm Street, and The Goonies, and you can tell when you watch it that Peele did indeed take bits of inspiration from all of them and throw them in the crockpot, and this is what popped out. It doesn’t measure up to any of those for me, except maybe C.H.U.D., but it sure tries. I’m glad people love this movie, because it’s awesome to see a movie without CGI or tons of jump scares do well with a modern audience when we’ve had exactly the opposite for more than the last decade. It just wasn’t made for me. I give it a high 3, but a 3 nonetheless. Please don’t hate me lol. I used to have a disclaimer in my bio that I’m a party-pooper. Maybe I should add that back in.
