The Village

The Village ★★★★★

Like Unbreakable this is a film about people who have sought to define themselves along a narrative mythology, here being a reconstruction of American history, arteficial yet sustaining, a cinematic world. As in Unbreakable it is the disabled who at once bear the weight of pain inflicted upon them by this mythology and it is the disabled who at once lash out and sustain it. A man becomes a monster because he has no recourse for his trauma and confusion but to identify with monsters and in so doing allows the belief in monsters to remain real for the rest. A beautiful, haunting film where everything is a costume and everything is true because the world is exactly this fake. Our triumph over the wolf leaves a corpse at the bottom of a pit.
