    The White Tiger

    ★★★½

"A successful entrepreneur always finds his competitor’s secrets" - Balram

The White Tiger is about the hunger for success, in the midst of social dynamics told through the lens of servitude in India. The imbalance between rich & poor or upper & lower castes systems is visualised poignantly. I noticed a number of nods and similarities to Parasite in this film, which could purely be coincidental, seeing as this is based on a 2008 novel.

There is a seamless transition in tones…

  • Crack: Cocaine, Corruption and Conspiracy

    Crack: Cocaine, Corruption and Conspiracy

    ★★★½

“Once you take that first hit...it's over." - Asethea ‘Lulu’ Pierce

    Crackdown on Crack!
An absolute cracker of a documentary. A corrupt government complicit in creating a “drug epidemic” and then punishing victims for its own blunder, rather than focusing on reform and rehabilitation. Great crack anecdotes. THE REAL RICK ROSS!!!

    Mass deceit.
    Mass hypocrisy.
    Mass inequality.
    Mass production.
    Mass propaganda.
    Mass incarceration.

What happens when the egos, beliefs and paths of four Black historical icons, who just happen to be friends align? As a kid, I admit to thinking Mohammed Ali and Cassius Clay were two different people. One Night in Miami not only corrects that misnomer, but also weaves the stories of Jim Brown, Malcolm X and Sam Cooke to form a sort of…

    Driveways

    ★★★★½

"We're moving to Aunty April's house. We can be real neighbours." - Cody

Driveways is about a coincidental bond formed between a young boy and an old man. It starts off like a copycat version of Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino, but ends up a lot differently. It turns out to be subtle, nuanced and touching in its storytelling. There is something about the circle of life that’s heavily emphasised yet unspoken in this film, that resonates with me. The score…
