    Try Harder!

    "For Lowell students, I feel like there's definitely a pressure from your classmates, and also a pressure at home too. It's like a war on two fronts." - Alvan

    Try Harder! documents the struggles and hysteria around college applications. I must say, the marginalisation of Asian-American applications irrespective of stereotypes, is a big travesty, and the end of this film proves that corruption. Yeah talking about you Standford University. The kids who take center-stage here portray genuine humanity while showing pure…

    The Disciple

    ★★★★

    "I do nothing but practice, and yet this keeps happening, then I get angry with myself." - Sharad

    A very internalised and meditative film about perseverance, The Disciple is a gruelling slow burn that tackles the dynamics of hard-work versus talent. The film is self-aware enough to offhandedly portray breathing exercises to assert it’s meditativeness. I have to admit to dozing off sometimes, not because it’s boring, but because the classical hums and lullabies literally put me to sleep. Remarkably nuanced filmmaking. Mentorship’s are great, but toxic once obsessive.

    "He's changed everything again. I don't want this anymore." - Mr. Thomas

    Themed around home renovations, The House is an anthology film with an eerie/spooky vibe. Each story is quite different, but one common theme is that plans for homes never turn out out as intended, taking either a surprising or sinister turn. Each of the anthologies are as follows;
    1. And heard within, a lie is spun: An unfair entrapment. 4/5
    2. Then lost is truth that can't be won:…

    ★★★★

    "Call it a fantasy, call it a dream, call it pretend. A dream might be a lie, but it's also true." - Cyrano

    Such an unconventional love triangle (or love quadrilateral, depends on how you look at it), Cyrano is adeptly translated from stage to screen, exuding musical and choreographic flair. The well done emotional beats caught me off guard, probably because I was prepared for a completely cheesy love story. Some parts are indeed cheesy and unrealistic, like wanting…
