I often wonder if I am respecting the conventions and customs of cinematic heritage, discourse, and criticism when I call Isao Takahata my favorite filmmaker. Is he just my favorite storyteller, as animation is essentially a different medium? Or my doubt is merely a product of the dearth of people who share with me my thoughts? But nobody said I had to choose a favorite. I know Isao Takahata as the only traditional man I love without any reservations. He is the first name that comes to my mind when I hear the word 'cinema' and my attachment to it. His reputation is something I care for. He is probably the only person I respect entirely on the basis of his art, as I do not know much about what kind of man he was in his personal life.
