I was expecting more of a drama, but it's just a straight up comedy. And while it did manage to get a few yucks out of me, overall it's really just the most bland and generic execution they could have come through with for this great premise. Sad that among all these veteran actors, Zach Braff is the best part of the movie. Not to mention Red Letter Media did this exact premise 15 years ago!

On the scale of video game movies, this is definitely one of the better ones. Very competently made, great set design, surprisingly strong CGI effects, and some solid horror scenes.
My major gripe is the fact that the film feels the need to explain fucking everything through exposition. There are some awesome moments of subtle subtext and imagery that lose all of their oomph when explained by the giant exposition dump near the end.

This was pitched to me as COD Nazi Zombies: The Movie and that's kinda what I got. Slick modern WW2 action combined with zombie horror. Throw in a few cookie cutter war movie characters and you basically have Black Ops 2 Origins mode.

It's clear Paul Thomas Anderson puts a lot of value in his opening scenes. It takes balls to have your entire opening take place with zero dialogue, and it takes skill to make that opening an effective introduction to the character and the stakes. Anderson has both in spades.
