LOOOVED the flight sequences. Watched at IMAX. Felt like a rollercoaster ride.
The rest of the film was alright. Seemed like a fitting commentary on Tom Cruise's aging stardom. Rooster/Maverick relationship was decent. The romance subplot sucked.
But tbh all I really wanted out of this was FAST planes going FAST, so am pretty happy in that regard.
Ehhh... pretty underwhelming despite all the polarized opinions and controversy.
Good stuff:
- Joaquin Phoenix is amazing (as he always is)
- The cinematography is excellent
- The score/soundtrack are pretty good too
Not good stuff:
- Borrows heavily from other films. Not bad in itself, but it doesn't know what to do with any of it nor does it have anything of substance to add.
- Disjointed themes and plot threads. The class war and Arthur's personal journey were…
FUCK YES. This is why I love cinema.
Endgame was:
1) Quite different to what I expected?
2) A fucking M A S T E R P I E C E
Probably the biggest film event... ever? Really, in many ways this feels more like an event than a film, and that puts it in a league of its own. And somehow they still managed to live up to the hype.
Also perhaps the best cinema-going experience of my life, with everyone cheering and hollering at all the right moments.
I loved every minute.
