    The Matrix Resurrections

    โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Is the Matrix Resurrections good or bad? Is it both? Neither? Yes. No. Other. All of the above. Itโ€™s messy, itโ€™s wondrous, itโ€™s super fucking queer, and itโ€™s a film overtly antagonistic to the tyranny of binary thinking.

Is the Matrix Resurrections deeply personal or a corporate cash-in? For 18 years, Lily Wachowski did not want to make another Matrix movie. For 18 years, Lana Wachowski did not want to make another Matrix movie. But Warner Bros did. And muchโ€ฆ

Station Eleven recalls the Fredric Jameson quote โ€œit is easier to imagine an end to the world than an end to capitalism". The world does indeed end in Station Eleven but it also offers a glimpse of a new beginning; emancipated from the shackles of capitalism, where mere survival is insufficient and our connection with art and each other is paramount. A new beginning that is still firmly within our grasp.

There's a scene early on where Farha and her friend Fareeda are sitting on swings playfully chatting. They are dreaming of their future, the lives they want to lead and the people they want to be. Their conversation is abruptly halted by the sound of an explosion nearby. They bound for their village, while the camera lingers on the empty swing seats, in that moment their dreams are abandoned, their childhood is stolen. It's heavy handed for sure.. most ofโ€ฆ

It's brimming with gruesome gore and visceral violence. It's twisted, it's sadistic, it's brutal and it's 2-fucking-hours-and-18-fucking-minutes. Why? Whhhhyyyyy?????? The real bleach and salt in the wound is a film that can't justify its length and is burdened with pacing issues that were as easily avoidable. And it's not like much needed to be cut: just the tip, really. It's unfortunate because the film is otherwise such a depraved joy. The synth score, neon lighting and film grain steep theโ€ฆ

This was so desperate to be an epic love story, replete with the corniest piano solos and jarring use of free form jazz. It's extraordinarily soapy, sans any self-awareness. The flashback structure is odd.. it amounts to nothing? It's bizarrely abandoned when the film's timeline reaches this dramatic point. But so many scenes felt like that - they barely establish context and a distinct lack of buildup to its most dramatic beats. Halfway through the two characters seemingly switch rolesโ€ฆ
