Once upon a Tom... in Hollywood’s review published on Letterboxd:
But now you have nothing to love.
Can't I love you?
No, not really.
The staging and imagery are quite imaginative, but my enjoyment of this film was hampered by my intolerance for the kind of direct dialogue-as-lyrics musicals that make me die a little inside every time I'm subjected to them. Example: the "we're in love" song is a repeated chorus of "We love each other so much," and literally nothing else at all for several minutes. More of an opera than a musical, the material is quite dark and a bit depressing, to be honest. Much like the director's previous offering, Holy Motors, this is a film I can admire but cannot really enjoy. Not Recommended.
