Once upon a Tom in Hollywood’s review published on Letterboxd:
This is probably not a good time to ask, but is that a baby?
In the year 2020, this qualifies as the absolute perfect candidate for a “use it or lose it” free Redbox rental. I could guess pretty much exactly what it was going to be, and I felt perfectly comfortable giving it approximately two thirds of my attention for 90 minutes on a Saturday afternoon.
I’ve definitely seen better versions of this “mysterious things awakened from the deep” trope, but I’ve also seen it done a WHOLE lot worse. Unsurprisingly, Kristen Stewart was good. The real surprise was that TJ Miller was too. Apart from a few annoyances (like a ton of exposition fed to us via glimpses of newspaper headlines), I had a decent enough time with it. But not enough to recommend.
