  This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

  In my life, I’ve seen a lot of stories that show the same events from different perspectives. But I have never experienced one whose stunning third act revelation is that two lonely young boys were actually friends the whole time. They reached out to each other in tenderness, in shared imagination and joy. It made me think back on all the people I could have been kinder to in my school days. Kore-eda, the master!

  An incredible film for creatures. The pelicans, the pelicans, the warawara, the big fish, that dang heron… All beautiful and unique in movement and personality. Also, grannies fit under the definition of “creatures” here, and I love them most of all.

  Miyazaki’s take on Petite Maman.

  “How Do You Live” is a much better title. Glad he left it in the movie.
