Ran ★★★★★

When I first watched Ran at the beginning of the year, I told myself I would explore much more of Akira Kurosawa’s films. A bit over half a year later, and I’m back watching the only film I’ve seen from him. A 4K screening was being held at The Rio tonight. Having loved it beyond belief the first time around, I was eager to see it again. Especially on a big screen for the first time. On top of that, I convinced my brother to go see it with me, and that was that.

All was going well with the screening... until around forty minutes before its conclusion. At about that point, a power outage occurred inside the theatre, and the entire block where it is located. After a little while of waiting, management came out and said the remainder of the screening was cancelled, due to how long a crew would take to further investigate the outage.

While I’m not too bummed about missing out on the rest of the film on such a big screen, the theatre gave out a slip to each individual that granted them free admission for a future film of their choice. My brother and I are going to come back sometime soon and see another film there, with these passes in tow. As for Ran, we will be finishing it at home tomorrow. Despite that setback in actually finishing it again, I’m still choosing to log it today, because 1) I wanted to end July 2022 on a strong note; and 2) Fuck it.

I don’t have it in me to write out another lengthy set of thoughts about Ran. My initial review contains a solid display of what I think of it, combined with my first impressions of it. It can be found right here.

[Edit (8/2/22)]: My brother and I finished the last forty minutes of Ran from home. I still hail it as a masterful film, while my brother told me he enjoyed it, and that it’s cool.
