Midsommar

Midsommar ★★★★½

Director’s Cut.

A great expansion on an already-great experience. We get a whole lot more material, with some added scenes at night to decompress from the creeping exposures of daylight. What’s interesting is that these sequences at nighttime seem to continuously tease out Dani’s reluctance with the cult, while the rest of the movie wavers in daylight, laying bare the internal grief and turmoil and heartache that leads her to such a dangerous communal release. Really complex, layered character work. Also, the added reference to JSTOR, re: thesis-writing, was admittedly hilarious. The only downside here is that I was really hoping for some extra scenes with my boy Ruben — alas, we never get to see more of that puffy-lipped toe-headed oracle.
