Likes movies about Gladiators but has never been to a Turkish prison
Now this is a wild picture. Imagine East Rider if it started cops instead of hippies. There’s even a scene where the cops take target practice and shoot at an easy rider poster. At first it feels like the cops are the protagonists but the film is actually more sympathetic to hippies. Conrad Hall is the cinematographer and while he apparently had vicious disagreements with the director he was allowed to shoot the interiors any way he wanted and they are fascinating. The opening interior sequences are incredible and are pretty much a seminar on how to shoot scenes without dialogue.
Possibly my favorite comedy film of all time. Add to that it is brilliantly directed by Danny Devito, seriously the editing is fantastic, the pace is wonderful, and to top it all off, every single department nails it. From production design down the film fucking sparkles. And to think the DVD is out of print and it never had a blu ray release of any kind is nothing short of criminal. This film should be a criterion release. If you watch it and don’t like it I’ll be your enemy for life.
