Annette

Annette ★★★★★

A cynical examination of fame, industry and ego whose commonly explored themes are only made more effective by Carax’s deft handing of the subject matter. It ain’t the recency bias talking when I say Annette has some of the most stunning music and set pieces to ever come out of the genre. The soundtrack is one I’d actually buy — just banger after operatic rock banger. Adam Driver’s never been better. Spoiling as little as possible, the child actress playing the titular role is freakishly good in her short amount of screen time as well, and while Carax does admittedly employ some odd creative choices here, they work and I don’t think I would’ve handled that character a different way. An impeccably crafted, visual and auditory masterpiece I can’t believe exists.
