The Mirror

The Mirror ★★★★½

As I wrote earlier today, no one makes tributes to life and cinema quite as Iranians do. Basically where film ends, life continues but they actually are inseparable. Panahi takes us through streets of Tehran mapping social problems of the country through little girl's journey to find home (and now we can suddenly shout out loud the obvious metaphors we might be thinking). He has never been afraid to say what needs to be said and because of that people has tried to make him pay but what we have actually ended up with are some of the most beautiful and inventive modern cinema - This is Not a Film and Taxi to mention few where Ayneh's meta-cinematic society criticism gets their highest expression. In order to take cinema forward, we should take a close look at these incredibly beautiful and soulful Iranian gems of "the new wave" because they belong to the greatest cinema ever made...
