Now this is my kind of coming of age. There isn't any like it I've ever seen. A refreshment of nostalgia. An adolescent, pubescent slice of white suburban insecurity. It's difficult to put into words the insurmountable strangeness of the film. It's a straightforward script to be clear, but the effictiveness of its simplicity, the natural performances from each character, and malaise of daily life is captured beautifully.

I refuse to believe I'm the only fucking guy who thinks Get Out is way too highly regarded, and that meanwhile Us is The Godfather of sophomore features. Lupita creating a new slasher villain right before our fucking eyes. That couldn't possibly be a hot take.

The debate still rages on today. Which "rock horror opera" is better? Rocky Horror Picture Show, or Phantom of the Paradise? The answers pretty easy for me. Phantom of the Paradise is such a magnificent, bombastic achievement not just in terms of music and zaniness, but De Palma's deft hand is technically more interesting than anything in Rocky Horror Picture Show. So as far as that debate goes, there's no competition. Phantom of the Paradise blows that shit out of the water.

Sexual depravity and torture to me comes off worse than any other physical torture. Sorry, this movie blows.

The criticisms you might've heard levied towards Halloween Kills are, unfortunately, warranted. The exposition heap is dumped on you almost completely throughout. It tends to remind you how evil Michael is and the issue with that is is that we, the audience, already knows how evil he is. It's almost futile to keep reminding us. It never drives the story forward in a meaningful way, it's just stuck in the exposition rut.

However, where Halloween Kills shines is directly linked…

Pieces of a Woman is a tender portrait of a woman slowly fading into depression, with the best performance I've seen this year in Vanessa Kirby.
