Midsommar combines a matter-of-fact use of violence and gore with beautifully shot fairy tale visuals to create the most empowering feminist film I've seen in a long time. Eat your heart out Captain Marvel.
Beware of young audiences as the climax seemed to cause the teen boys in the back row to completely loose their shit, creating a huge round of nervous laughter in the most critical scene.
It's tough to emphasize how important the visual storytelling is here. It's a movie that I intend to watch repeatedly, delighting in the hidden symbolism and easter eggs like a teenager dissecting the meaning of The Cube. It's fun to allow a movie to have this much impact on me as an adult. Mandy had a very similar effect; both use drugs to emphasize the emotions important for the protagonist. Both films master this perfectly. I felt quite effected by the visuals, as I've always felt that the experience of taking drugs is majority thanks to the dilation of your eyes, and that surely there was a way to create a similar effect for a sober audience. I was right! Thanks, Ari!
Love and appreciate having the chance to see movies like this from a director like this. Keep em coming.
