For its entirety, I kept bracing for a sudden scare. A loud noise, a smash cut to a horrific image, a jump into the frame.
I didn't expect this because this is a film of cheap tricks or cliches. I didn't expect it at all. I wanted it. I *wanted* that relief in tension, the sudden snap freeing me from anxiety. "Ah, the bad thing happened, so I can rest now, even for a moment."
It never came. Like bracing for something terrible, crossing the road to confirm what horror you already know is true. You simply have deal with this feeling, all the way to the very end. At least then, through it all, there's catharsis.
