The Holy Mountain

The Holy Mountain ★★★★★

The Holy Mountain is unlike any film you will ever see. Probably the most bizarre and esoteric film I have ever seen, however it is also so enthralling and so gorgeous. I am not going to pretend that while watching I was at all able to decode everything in this film. Jodorowsky is presenting hundreds of ideas and making hundreds of statements in this film with some heavy symbolism and some striking imagery. You will not see any images like you have in this film, and the visuals of this film are 100% its biggest selling point, for me. I have never been so captivated and baffled at the use of strange props, set design, and costuming. This film contains some of the most beautiful shots I have seen in film and this is achieved by excellent framing, camera zooms and the colorful and strange mise-en-scene. The Holy Mountain offers an abundance of shots that are so beautifully strange, you will be entertained and captivated all-throughout. This film is so surreal and cryptic, sometimes in a way that leads to lots of confusion, but consistently in a way that is impossible not to admire and be captivated by. Needless to say, for fans of the surreal, the visuals in this film is a FEAST. Cannot stress how much I loved the visuals, nothing I can say can do them justice. In themes and narrative, as I said, this film is making many statements, and a lot of them are a challenge to decipher. However there are major themes that are easy enough to interpret and the way the director explores these ideas through strong symbolism and bizarre sequences is absolutely brilliant. The ending of this film is one of the most powerful and unexpected endings I have seen. This is a film that will make you think, and will blow you away with the obscure images it presents. This film has so much to offer, and you can attempt to study and interpret it endlessly. The ideas are fascinating, and the imagery is beautiful, disturbing, strange and wholly unique. This is a film that will stick with you, and I already want to rewatch it and again be blown away by the images. This is one of the best films I have ever seen, at least visually, to be quite honest. For fans of surrealism and bizarre imagery, this is a must watch. The Holy Mountain is truly a powerful and unique cinematic experience.
