The Grand Audacity of Filthy Thieves

“Can you guess what every woman’s worst nightmare is?”

Emerald Fennell, the British screenwriter and director of Promising Young Woman could have easily titled her genius debut this. But in a similar vein, she took perverse inspiration from convicted sex offender Brock Turner’s alternate label as a “promising young man,” and applied it to one of the most satisfying and mind-inhabiting films of 2020. Filthy thieves attend Stanford, too.

    In Fennell’s framed space, the…

Norman Jewison’s Al Pacino classic American legal dramedy …And Justice for All (1979) is one of my all-time favorite films. Written by the then-married screenwriters Valerie Curtin and Barry Levinson, their diverse representations of American society – corrupt judges, spineless lawyers, railroaded citizens, emotionally worn lawyers who care, and the lack of positive female representation – makes for a rather authentic critique of the USA of 1979. And is not radically different 40 years later.

Very sad to see all of the young people Soleil knew who died before age 30.

PAY ATTENTION to who you call your friends. ASK THEM if they are okay.
    LISTEN.

Life is not all about partying hardy and hooking up.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Stopped watching when in the last 30 minutes, the adoptive mother Tina decides to take the child Vittoria to the bar where the biological mother Angelica whores around. The child witnesses Angelica perform oral sex on a random guy. LOST ME THERE WITH THAT. NOT EVEN NECESSARY. I don’t care how sexually liberated European countries are in their art, exposing a child to sexual situations is abuse.

    67%.

Yellow Rose has heart and a decent soundtrack, but what could have been a solid depiction of a Filipina-American teenager dealing with the traumatic incident and the fallout of her mother’s arrest by ICE, while simultaneously strongly aspiring to become a country musician is reduced to a soft misfire resulting from contrived screenwriting, uneven cinematography, and some underwhelming acting.

Filipina-Mexican American Broadway actor Eva Noblezada, a youthful 24 years old plays an even younger 17-year-old Rose Garcia (many have already…

    Kajillionaire

    ★★★★

Kajillionaire offers a spot-on representation of sociopathic parents in the United States—set in morally indifferent California, no less.

Theresa (Debra Winger) and Robert (Richard Jenkins) Dyne ultimately grift themselves out of a purposeful life, while wearing the oft overdone eccentric white folk facade. Evan Rachel Wood’s Old Dolio Dyne is a young woman that many of us have encountered. Socially isolated and co-dependent on her parents, her grasp of the world around her is that of a paralyzed spectator.
