Viktor’s review published on Letterboxd:
An overall very solid film that I weighed down by some absolutely insane direction at points. The visuals and story are on point, truly one of the best looking films of this year and I hope Netflix campaigns this for at least the technical Oscar’s because it has a great chance of winning a few. I think a lot of people may compare this to saving private Ryan which would be a massive insult to this film because saving private Ryan is the epitome of heroic fetish American war cinema and this very much tries to avoid that. If I were to compare it to any other war film it would be “come and see” but ofcourse come and see takes everything presented here and multiplies it tenfold.
Anyway my main gripe with the film is the choice and use of music, for some crazy reason a somewhat dubstep bass “bwahhh” is constantly used throughout which is just insane to me and when they aren’t using that the music can feel a bit too on the nose and manipulative but other than that and maybe a couple of the characters not getting much in terms of character I don’t have many complaints.
This should definitely be Netflix’s Oscar contender but since it’s in German and not exactly a feel good movie I have my doubts it’ll be campaigned heavily.
