The King of Comedy 1982
This captures the same magic as the finale of A New Leaf, an unexpected and almost painful grace. Closest I think Scorsese got to this again is Color of Money

Providence 1977
A portrait of self loathing and boredom that perfectly captures the insidious nature of regret and guilt. What we most dislike and fear about ourselves has an awful habit of spreading fast, and those that we hold closest often become victims of that same self loathing. Other people become, in our minds, our tormenters, shaped to either represent what we most hate about ourselves, or to expound upon and explain it. This digs deep into the stage of the mind when we're left to our own devices, ripping apart memories and relationships in the name of our own inability to cope with our pasts.
