Vindahl’s review published on Letterboxd:
Its fun. Its serious. Its about love. Its about hate. Both original, and with cliches. But what an achievement, to just make a movie like this. Of course it makes a parody out of the Nazis, while it still show their dangerous fanatism, and how propaganda can put a spell on a people. But the movie also show that Germans are humans too, with kind hearts and childish innocence. I really like that nuance.
There are some very powerful and emotional scenes in this movie, but with a lot of silly moments too, it never gets too dark. Overall however, this is more of a “coming-of-age”, than an actual comedy. Scarlett Johansson is good, but her role is not that big actually. The young boy Roman Griffin Davis, on the other hand, is amazing! What a strong performance, in a difficult role, that goes through a crazy journey. All in all, its a very brave movie, with glimpses of something brilliant. But it also takes some predictable turns, and at times it struggles to make a kids personal story, work for an adult audience.
