  Hands down my favorite Nicholson performance. He brings so much complexity and sympathy to a character who makes it very hard to root for him. He barely roots for himself, as to invest any emotions into hope for contentment is only setting himself up for disappointment.   Now realizing that the opening monologue of Rubber was a thesis statement for Quentin Dupieux's entire career. I had a huge internal debate on whether Jon Heder's performance is the worst I have ever seen or some kind anti-acting stroke of genius.

  I just can't believe that a film like this came from 1931 Germany. Not only ahead of its time but progressive and impactful in its anti-authoritarianism even now. Even beyond the openly-queer romantic longing, this is a film about female comradery.
