He barely roots for himself, as to invest any emotions into hope for contentment is only setting himself up for disappointment.     I just can't believe that a film like this came from 1931 Germany. Not only ahead of its time but progressive and impactful in its anti-authoritarianism even now. Even beyond the openly-queer romantic longing, this is a film about female comradery.
