Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood ★★★

With Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Tarantino takes another huge bite of historical fiction except this time there’s very little meat on the bone.

It worked better with Basterds mainly because of Waltz’s Hans Landa who brought genuine propulsion to an otherwise universally known historical plot.

I believe that’s where this film errs; In order to re-generate genuine interest in a well known historical event, Tarantino needed better fictional inserts. Di Caprio is wasted here with a character arc that is flat throughout the second half. Robbie is merely a distraction. Pitt is the only one who brings much needed oomph to the fictional in-story but nearly not enough to carry us through the almost three hour runtime!

Though entertaining, the trademark-Tarantino slasher comedy flavored ending is more amuse-bouche than entrée, leaving us unsatisfied and yearning for more.
