The Sacrament ★★★★

While the narrative feels nedlessly compressed, The Sacrament is mostly another in a string of West films that successfully digest disparate historical interests and film references in ways that continue to elude most of West's contemporaries. Omni-directional in its critiques, even Trojan horses the recognition of extant journalistic exploitation and exoticization, in what is both autocritique and an extended film reference that justifies its gimmick. Seimetz is brilliant, Gene Jones is brilliant.
