After Hours

After Hours ★★★½

"You won't believe the night I've had."

Another look at the New York underbelly by Scorsese but this is more like his segment of New York Stories than Taxi Driver, with the world shown as odd but not shown through eyes of hate. It's more like a Velvet Underground song.

The film captures well the surreal qualities that the late night can bring and the ending brings it all together. I was still slightly disappointed with the film, however, expecting more due to its cult status. The writing can be clumsy at times and whilst Scorsese's famous uses of camera are all present, it almost feels like this could be his student film rather than one from 1985.
