A Nightmare on Elm Street ★★★★½

This slasher classic boasts great kills, awesome music, and a wonderfully simple inspiration that Craven can twist and layer to his heart's content. Freddy is iconic the moment Robert Englund first slides on the glove, and his attacks are appropriately vicious, each drilling an indellible image of suburban phantasmagoria in our minds. The acting is mostly arch, and the plot gets goofy in Act 3 -- but the mastery of form ensures the film loses none of its potency.
