I have yet to read the book, but I have seen the old film. First, I am very happy when a decent horror film does well at the box office, because horror as a genre can be very rewarding to watch and anytime a horror film does as well as It has. You know there are going to be a ton of horror films coming out in the next 1-3 years.
This was definitely a modern horror movie set in the 1980s. Similar shots, story structure, and Pennywise is portrayed much more demonic then the older film. All these factors point towards heavy influence to the horror juggernauts from this decade like The Conjuring, Insidious, etc. This film did get a little to reliant on the shock/jump scare factor in the 2nd/3rd act. They should have have heavily played on the predatory and creepy nature of Pennywise throughout the film.
However, I do think part 2 is going to a bit more mature with its horror and I anticipate it will be better then part 1. When the full cast list goes out we will have a good idea of the films direction. A must see film if you are a horror fan, and a great way to kick off fall!
