    Eternals

I didn't write on this film or many other Marvel films recently, partially because I've felt somewhat disenchanted with them all of late but also the conversations around them becoming quickly tiresome and others having said most of what I already feel quite clearly on here already.

But coming back to Eternals, my feelings still not massively shifted since its release, I still think this might be the unsung gem of Phase 4 even if it's not my personal best…

I am far more enamoured with Luca's work post-CMBYN, as he continues to become more of the filmmaker I hoped he could be one day. Do you know what I hate?
I hate how much I enjoy this movie unconditionally despite all of its shortcomings and plodding sequences. It's not a perfect movie, or even a perfect high school movie, but god damn it's got charm and humour and heart enough to win you over again and again. I love it.

(Notes from a well overdue 2021 rewatch:

Heath Ledger doing the little twirl on the stairs as the big band kick in with Frankie Valli’s Can't Take My Eyes Off You… that’s all.

The final poem reading and Julia Stiles’ utterly sincere delivery ripped my heart into tiny bits.)
