Will’s review published on Letterboxd:
Nope has finally released in the U.K. and it’s definitely a spectacle to witness, despite probably being one of the most divisive films of the year.
not for everyone, this mash-up of Jaws and Third Encounters of The Third Kind is well crafted and thought out, with desired repeated viewing. finished it with a lot of questions and thoughts, some close to what people online have been saying, some way far out. it’s just a lot of fun.
i would say I prefer the first half to the second, once we understand the nature of the ‘ufo’ some of the unsettling themes seemed to wear off, but i really appreciate that it didn’t go in the direction i thought it would, and the messages conveyed are done meticulously. the direction is outstanding, featuring one of the scariest scenes i’ve ever seen on film. yes, the barn scene. terrifying. performances are also great.
all the stuff with Gordy was also done really well. The shoe too, loved everything about what it’s trying to say. Jordan Peele is 3/3 with NOPE, cementing himself as one of the most exciting filmmakers to turn out completely original and thrilling work.
