It's a little slow to start and some plot points aren't quite as strong as others, but What's Eating Gilbert Grape is still an effective film thanks to an emotionally-driven story, likable characters and fantastic performances from Johnny Depp and a very young Leonardo DiCaprio (the latter showing some of the most impressive and committed work especially at an early start of a career).
