Remind me to never watch trailers again. I never learn.
I can't stop thinking about how much more I would have enjoyed experiencing this movie for the first time if the trailers hadn't given away the best/funniest moments... which is a bummer because The Nice Guys is a pretty damn good and funny movie otherwise.
Huge fan of Shane Black here, and man it's nice to see something original. Well, mostly original, I'd say. With all these sequels these days I feel like it's been years since I've seen a film with characters that are completely new to me, so that was refreshing.
To me this felt like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang 'lite'. It's got the writing, the jokes, the randomness, Gosling brilliantly delivers YET again, Crowe is Crowe but he's still very good, but it doesn't quite deliver the full package like KKBB does. It has a few weak story moments, thanks to the somewhat unnecessarily convoluted story, that it has trouble pulling itself out of, and felt just the slightest bit disappointing when all is said and done by the end of the film, but I figure if I hadn't seen all the best parts in the trailer then I would have enjoyed it a bit more....
Have some respect for your audience members, studios!
But screw it. Still a movie that deserves your money and one that I hope does really well.
"The Nice Guys" tentatively lands at the #7 spot in my 2016 ranked list.
