Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: The Last Jedi ★★★★½

And yet we all thought Disney was completely incapable of taking chances, huh?

So much to really digest on one sitting, and since I’m seeing this again on Saturday, I’ll go more in depth then, but make no mistake, Rian Johnson has accomplished not only the most visually striking installment to date, it’s also one of the most morally complex and emotionally rich of the franchise, completely defying my own expectations at every turn hardly like any other blockbuster I’ve seen in recent years. A true Star Wars film at its heart, but also every bit as much of a true Rian Johnson film at its core. Many of the surprising character arcs and moments here are bound to both please yet probably just as well infuriate many fanatics, but excluding the Finn side plot, I was thoroughly satisfied with just about every unexpected directions Johnson took with our main characters here. Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher have never been better, while Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver in particular deliver the two of the most emotionally charged performances the entire franchise itself has ever had.
