Mikey’s review published on Letterboxd:
Solo: A Star Wars Story mainly fails with lyricism. New Star Wars movies are just uninterested in anything that does not pass the grade in The Star Wars Mythology.
An inspired move would have been to make this film less of an origin story and more of the sly, yet subtle crossover of genres instead of numbing us with a vision of what the mass audiences wants to see.
The script is a thrown together tonic mix of heist, adventure, western and science fiction with a dab of the Dirty Dozen, and the films troubled production grinds onward's at the bequest of Kathleen Kennedy. It is exciting to see a mainly zesty movie get past Disney's border patrol into Star Wars. I enjoyed it on that level more and more, its just that most of the movie lacks dramatic solutions to its pleasurable baiting of its fandom.
