    this does so much more than mooch off of the success of w. d. jenning's/mark rydell's the cowboys, which it has been accused of, as it, too, follows (a) young boy(s) learning the ropes of the cowboy profession on his first cattle drive across state lines, which brings him face to face with the harsh reality of the life he's dreamed of. but, directly opposed to the cowboys' conclusion, it presents the western hero's sacrifice as pointless and the civilization that emerges in his place as fickle and undeserving of his sacrifice

    there are so many scenes in this movie that are so subtly and strangely moving, like when axel calls his parents and covers the telephone speaker with his hand, which is such a simple thing, yet it made me disintegrate each time it happened. and so many small, impressive details, like when a scene is fading into the next and tommy claps his hands, allowing the music to cut out very suddenly. and the characters are all so vibrant… i couldn't even begin to describe how john cassavetes makes me feel in this
