Shin Godzilla

Shin Godzilla ★★★½

Shin Godzilla brings a fresh and modern refitting of Godzilla that is a lot more horrifying than the series's previous iterations.

The connections to the not-so-distant Fukushima nuclear disaster and Japan's less than stellar response are easy to spot in the first half of the movie. For the first time in a kaiju movie, I was engaged with the human element.

Godzilla is perfectly crafted, albeit held back a little bit by some CGI that sticks out like a sore thumb. When Godzilla first appears, he is hideously leaking blood from his orifices and cruises the city with the deadest and most vacant eyes I have seen on a monster.

The only issue that I had with this was with the second half of the movie, it felt like I was getting a repeat, though very different, of the beginning of the movie, and I could have used that pared down.

This is probably my favorite Godzilla movie, and recommend it to anyone that even slightly enjoys giant monster movies.
