Ready or Not

Ready or Not ★★★★

Finally, a good film on Sunday at FrightFest! Grace is marrying into the gaming dominion (they prefer dominion to dynasty) of Le Domas games but before the marriage can be consecrated she must take part in a game at midnight, as per family tradition. She picks a card which reveals the game to be played - it could be as innocent as chess or checkers, but of course she picks hide and seek, and we all know what that means. All of us apart from Grace that is.

The plot sounds pretty hokey on paper, and it is, but it's elevated by the execution - assured direction, slick pace, eye-catching set design and cinematography and a standout performance from Samara Weaving, who's starting to make waves in the genre world after strong lead roles in both Mayhem and this one. She's got an expressive face, with good comic timing and delivers her lines with deadpan wit. Her character is easy to root for here too; Grace's ingenuity and guile stacked against the comic barbarity of the blue bloods trying to hunt her down.

No spoilers, but the ending could go one of two ways and to my mind, chooses absolutely the best way. It's a film that to the last, doesn't take itself too seriously and is all the better for it.
