The only film I’ve ever given five stars despite my eyes rolling out of my head on several occasions, I am and will aways be a sucker for these indie offbeat coming of age bullshit.

Very rare to come by something so effortlessly original, charming and funny. Cheryl Dunne has got amazing screen presence and you can tell her hands are all over this.

There's such amazing intertextuality and the history lesson you get here is more of a breeze than a drag. You don't really realise it and the mix between docu and drama is wonderful. This is truly a landmark in both queer, documentary and black filmmaking.

The photography on this is exquisite, really liked the documentary style and some of those close ups were hitting Wong Kar wai levels. Lee wears his influences on his sleeve as this is insanely European. It's a bit rough around the edges but thoroughly enjoyable.

I appreciated what Campion was trying to achieve but I found this very tiresome and disjointed. Pacing was all over the place which limited some of the themes. Especially annoying because this film was anchored by a great score and some great performances, particularly Cumberbatch. Also Kodi Smit McPher can definitely act, but damn feels like he's miscast in just about everything he's in.

I've seen a fair few films in my time but hands down I've never personally related to a film more than this gem right now. Some of the conversations Tony has with his mum, I've had in real life with my mine. It's a great feeling to be represented but also makes you unequivocally uncomfortable at some of the shit the characters have to put up with.

It's a sweet as fuck coming of age and reactionary portrayal of black…

Why is this a 4.0 on letteboxd?

While yes this is better, and funnier than the last offering, that's not a hard feat to surpass. I felt no real ounce of emotion during these two hours, it just passed me by. Throwing everything in a script and hoping something will land is not the way to do it. Outlandish doesn't mean it's going to be funny. Why would I care about these characters if you decide to skip any ounce…
