All Quiet on the Western Front

All Quiet on the Western Front ★★★★

When I watched the 1930 version back in college, it absolutely astounded me with its perfection and I’ve been meaning to revisit it. This version has a lot of the great qualities of 1917, especially during the infantry charges over the top of the trenches, but I don’t feel it being directly connected to the 1930 film so much. I appreciate the German perspective provided here and the sense of being immersed in a senseless war, especially during that final sequence. If I didn’t already love the 1930 version and the film 1917 so much, I would probably love this more—I’ll give it four stars and see if that grows with another viewing.
