Ammonite ★★

A heavy-handed yet unremarkable film. The screenplay is so flimsy that even by the end of 2 hour plus runtime it simply doesn't feel like its achieved to tell an interesting enough story. Winslet's conviction is what keeps it watchable; Saoirse's talents are utterly wasted on a bland part, while the supporting players of the film like Anning's mother, Charlotte's husband, and Fiona Shaw's character are all one dimensional. Still it was great to see 'Ammonite' at the LFF, I just expected more from the film itself. I'll give it props for one thing though, its taught me that bathing stations were one of the worst inventions in human history
