glad i got to check this out soon after seeing iñárritu's amores perros. to get it out of the way, it was shot beyond beautifully and dicaprio is at his best.
expected more rawness, more of the primal and griping elements. the strongest a human can be, at their weakest. iñárritu has such a control over the scale and expanse of his films. yet here, instead of the film fully becoming an unspoken physical and spiritual movement, it becomes a little shackled by the revenge story. the revenge story itself i do guiltily enjoy, but i think some of it does prevent the final level the revenant could have been at.
still amazing, it's settling into my memory very positively. though it's just reaching for the peak, but anchored by some bullshit about revenge and god or something.
