Zach Marsh’s review published on Letterboxd:
The critical reception of Don't Look Up is definitely mixed. Right now I'm looking at the Rotten Tomatoes page for the film and, at the time of writing, it's sitting at 55%, which means, to all of my fellow film discusser people, just about half of us really don't like this movie!
And that's whatever, you can like or not like whatever you want. But, the thing is, I keep seeing this sort of, let's say common thread among a lot of the negative reviews, things like the word "blunt," "hits too close to home," "too on the nose," et cetera.
You know what else I happen to be looking at right now? It's a Venn diagram, kids!
The one half of this Venn diagram is "Critics Who Think Don't Look Up Hits Too Close to Home."
The other half is "Critics Who Hate Da 5 Bloods Because Spike Lee Showed War Crimes Photographs And We Knew He Would Because It's Not Spike Lee's First Film But We're Gonna Act Shocked About it Anyway."
So what, right? A Venn diagram? You see those all the time! Well something's really fascinating about this one, guys!
IT'S ONE FUCKING CIRCLE! THE TWO HALVES ARE ONE AND THE FUCKING SAME! YOU'RE ACTING SHOCKED THAT THE MOVIE DID EXACTLY WHAT THE MOVIE SAID IT WAS GOING TO DO AND...oh, hold on!
There's a third category! This is one of those three-circle Venn diagrams! What does that say inside the other circle?
Oh, it says, "People Who, in a Don't Look Up Situation, Would Be the Ones Who Cause Don't Look Up to Happen And We'd All Die As A Result!" And guess what?
THE VENN DIAGRAM IS STILL ONE FUCKING CIRCLE! IMAGINE THAT! IT "HITS TOO CLOSE TO HOME." OF COURSE IT DOES, YOU JACKASSES! IT'S SUPPOSED TO! YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO FEEL LIKE ADAM MCKAY JUST SMACKED YOU IN THE FACE WITH A FUCKING SLEDGEHAMMER, YOU IMBECILES! THAT MEANS THE MOVIE DID WHAT IT WAS SUPPOSED TO DO! AND YOU ALL JUST PROVED HIS FUCKING POINT!
We're all fucking doomed.
Anyway, give Best Supporting Actor to Mark Rylance, and that's all for now folks!
