Red Rocket

Red Rocket ★★★★½

Mikey Saber is a low-life, a loser, a user, an abuser, a groomer, a real, narcissistic piece of shit. But damn, if he isn't fun as hell to watch.

Casting Simon Rex as Mikey might be the best casting of 2021. Given Rex's own personal life: his time as an MTV VJ in the mid-to-late '90s, his Scary Movie roles, his spottings with Paris Hilton, his rap persona as Dirt Nasty, his own party-boy persona in real life, and of course, his short-lived porn career. The man is so naturally charming and funny, and has lived a full life, probably even more so than Mikey. His performance is also easily one of my favourites of the year and is a massive Oscar snub. Suzanna Son is a perfect screen partner – the two have such great chemistry. As is Bree Elrod, who shares a different kind, but no less magnetic, chemistry. To be fair, Rex has great chemistry with every actor here. This is Sean Baker's third home run (probably fourth, but I have not seen Starlet yet); I can't wait for his next project. Red Rocket is a killer comedy, but don't let it fool you, because like Mikey, there's a dark and dangerous tragedy underneath it all.

The Rexaissance is in full swing, and I'm here for it all the way.
