    The Lincoln Lawyer

One of the strangest science-fiction films I've ever seen. At first glance, the film seems to exist in a slightly exaggerated realist mode, only to pivot more and more as the film continues. Lincoln's license plate having an extra letter, motorcycle gangs positioned as an alternative to the "justice system" of Los Angeles, an antique gun once owned by a mobster; these small moments hint at a stranger, more diseased world than what we're shown.

    LA is shot with a…

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Everything spins in this movie. Records on a turn table, tapes on a deck, the fortunes and misfortunes of the characters. Winslow is working on his composition, but when it's stolen from him, it's not finished yet. The ultimate harm that Swan does Winslow is removing his ability to end his own story, subtext made text when Swan refuses to even let Winslow die without his permission. A phoenix is born from its own ashes, but Phantom's Phoenix is never…

Very neat trick that you only see characters walking up stairs at the beginning and the end of the film. The entire middle chunk of the film is just characters descending. Into madness, perhaps? Wakka wakka.

Knew some people like this in college and they really hate it when you laugh when they're doing self-serious goth shit. Have a sense of humor, man, you're pretending you're the devil while your servants clean up your cumstains.

Just incredible. Don't even really wanna go into it in depth but it reminded me of the feeling of reading some of my favorite short stories. People can be a chain holding you down, but they can also keep you tethered when you're getting blown away by the wind.

    Crime Wave

So beautifully, utterly unique in its sensibility and tone that the only movies it reminded me of while I was watching came out years after its release. Its tossed-off ideas are better than the entire plot of most movies. Legitimately can't believe I'd never heard of it until I saw Pete Toms review it a few weeks ago. A true cult classic with extra emphasis on the "classic" part.

Way more interesting a failure than most successful movies, and frankly it's barely a failure! If Lynch had final cut privileges, I genuinely think this would've had the same critical reevaluation that most of Carpenter's work had. The editing and pacing are the biggest problems (next to a frankly stunningly bad performance from Sting), and those are pretty decidedly not Lynch's fault. Meanwhile, the production design, the core group of actors, and the soundtrack are all pretty rad. If he…
