Nightmare Alley

Nightmare Alley ★★★★½

This doesn't have (couldn't have, probably) the naturally efficient storytelling knack that the 40s version has, but it almost makes up the difference with plenty of grisly, melodramatic menace. This comes so close to being a horror movie without ever quite making it, no wonder it's been a commercial disappointment even with this unbelievable cast, virtually every speaking part played by a star or familiar face. Feels kinda like a sinister cousin to West Side Story, another 2021 release made by a venerated filmmaker adapting a classic that seems preternaturally compatible with their own sensibility.
