The Night House

The Night House ★★★★

This is a movie that I’ve had my eye on. I love seeing horror movies at the theater so this was automatically a must watch for me. I didn't expect much from it. The trailers didn't really do MUCH for me. It looked intriguing but it just wasn't something that had me jumping out of my seat from excitement. The only reason I decided to see it opening night instead of tomorrow like I planned was the really good reviews it's been getting. I saw some people saying that it's gonna be a sleeper hit and just overall REALLY good things about it so I said screw it, imma go see it now. And DUDE! I’m so happy that I did cuz I freaking loved this movie.

This was directed by David Bruckner. The same guy who directed ‘The Ritual’ which is one of my favorite modern day horror movies. He also directed a part in the anthology (i think it is anyways) ‘Southbound’. I love him as a director. So far, he makes movies that I feel that I would make if I were half as talented as him. Movies that are though provolking and that are depressing as fuck lol. This is a guy that I’m gonna have my eye on from now on.

The acting from Rebecca Hall is nothing shy of amazing. I haven't seen much from her but from what I’ve seen, she’s great. This, to me, is her best work yet.
The acting from everyone is fantastic. Bruckner knows how to get the absolute best out of his cast.

I really liked the use of scares in this. This movie DOES have jumpscares but not to the same effect as mainstream horrors like ‘Insidious’ or ‘It’ or ‘The Conjuring’ etc. Those kinds of movies are heavy with the jumpscares. Which I don't mind. As long as you use jumpscares right, you’re fine. Two people walked out during the movie and I think that they were expecting a movie like the ones I’ve listed. So based on that, this movie definitely isn't for everyone. If you don't like slow burns, stay away from this. This movie takes it's time and that’s just not for everyone and I understand that.

As I said earlier, this movie is VERY thought provoking. I can see lots of people doing video essays on this movie. I myself don't understand the movie 100%. Just like I said in my review of ‘Nine Days’, “That’s the beauty of some movies. That’s one of the reasons that makes rewatching movies so great.”. I’ll definitely be thinking of this movie for days to come. And I can't wait to watch some video essays on this. I of course have my own understandings of this movie but not enough to articulate them. I will 100000% be rewatching this movie, either at the theater again or when it comes out on Blu-ray and I can’t wait to do an in depth review on this movie. There's so much to dig into and THAT has me super excited to revisit this hopefully sometime soon. Movies like this are why I love film (horror especially) and talking about them.

As of right now, 4 out of 5. It might go up eventually. There are some small issues I had with it like a certain character feeling almost pointless and some other plot issues that I’m sure make sense, I just don't understand it RIGHT NOW. I need to sit on this movie for a little and really think of it's meanings and symbolisms.
