Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping ★★★½

From it’s nonsensical title all the way up until its ending, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping never stops being an off-the-wall indictment of the braindead music industry. It is thoroughly entertaining, due mostly to the fact that the shenanigans shown are never taken seriously, but it's presented as if it is. The film’s self aware nature really helps sell the inherently low-brow humor. While I can’t say that the film’s commentary is groundbreaking, or even really insightful, seeing all these facets of celebrity culture lampooned in such a ridiculous way was really satisfying. And at the center of it all is the naive, insane lead: Conner4real. Samberg completely embodies this egomaniacal character and really accentuates his more absurd tendencies. Overall, it’s just a really funny film that knows what it is and isn’t afraid to go all the way with it.
